WHAT - A dildo can be any object designed for insertion into the vagina or anus.  They have been around for about 2500 years - only the materials have changed. Strap Ons (Harness) - A dildo strap-on can either go around the hips or thigh.  The harness is made of straps that radiate out from a central ring where the dildo is placed and then radiates out resting against the body.  Only a dildo with a flared end will work.  The best strap ons are made of leather or nylon and have tight fitting rings, buckles or velcro.   When purchasing a strap on you need to consider the size of the dildo that you want to use.

SIZES - The biggest mistake people make in purchasing a dildo is buying one that is too large. While it is true that the body can accommodate many different sizes, keep in mind that a thinner shaft is easier to to maneuver.  If you have recently had any kind of genital surgery or a long absence from sexual relations then smaller is better - you can always upgrade. The width of the dildo may be more important than the length.  Dildos vary in diameter ranging from 1" to 6".  As a rule of thumb 1 - 1 1/2" in diameter will be large enough. The most common dildo lengths are 6, 7, 8 and 9 inches. The average purchase if for a 6-8" shaft length.  If you like very deep penetration, choose a dildo 8" or longer. You can always thrust less deeply, but you cannot make a dildo that is too short reach further.  Vaginal length often correlates to height, so if you have a shorter frame you will probably prefer a shorter dildo.   

When looking at a dildo for anal play, remember that there is a curve in the rectum 3-5 inches in from the opening, so consider something shorter than 3".
